"Can you believe she wore a tank top to my funeral?"

Ah Futurama, it's good to have you back. Please never leave us again! Hey, here's something I never knew about the show: according to IMDB, Leela's outfit is based on those worn by the ass-kicking, name-taking heroines of scifi classics such as Alien and Terminator 2: Judgement Day. Case in point: Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor

Man, she looks totally badass! Granted, part of it is the machine gun in her hand and the fact that's she jacked, but the skintight tank and pants do contribute to the overall effect of kickassery. Of course, pulling off a Leela or Sarah Connor outfit in the real world (without the guns in your hand, mind you) might be a little difficult. Unless you have a flawlessly sculpted physique (or are drawn by an animator for maximum curvaceousness), wearing both a skintight top and a skintight bottom might draw attention to some stuff you'd rather hide. Plus, it might look kind of skanky/trashy, especially if you're not wearing a bra like Ms. Connor up there.
Good News Everyone!

This doesn't mean you having to give up on having a sleek, slim, and flattering silhouette. You can certainly wear one very close-fitting garment at a time. In this case I'd go with a tighter pair of bottoms, like black, gray, or dark blue skinny jeans. Jeggings (jean leggings) are another comfy and popular trend. A dark solid color is slimming and can make your legs look longer than they really are. Contrary to popular belief, a chic geek of any size can wear skinny jeans, as long as she keeps her entire look in miThis is wear the tank top comes in. It is tank top season, after all, and there are a lot of varieties of these suckers! There's a tank to flatter every body type out there, from elongating V-necks for petites to babydolls for ladies with a tummy. Also, there are plenty of detailed and even dressy tanks with details that can enhance your look. Got Kate-on-Lost style buff shoulders and upper arms? Buy a tank with unique straps! Got great Lara Croft-like boobs? Draw attention to them with a ruffle! Don't like your arms at all? Tank tops make great layering pieces too. Wear them with a chic cardigan or tailored jacket!

Bender to Leela: "Honey, I wouldn't talk about taste if I was wearin' a lime-green tank top"

Leela Look-Alike for the Chic Geek

So, just for the hell of it, I put together my very own Leela outfit! It can even be worn out amongst the general public:

I added some accessories because, well, I like accessories!! I particularly like the black and turquoise cuff bracelet since I think it totally looks like the thing that Leela wears on her arm. Note the loose-fitting white racerback tank to go along with the tight jeggings. Also, I like the ankle boots with this outfit as opposed to calf-high boots, since a tank is a lighter, smaller garment and calf-high boots tend to weigh an outfit down a bit. Plus, ankle boots are perfect shoes for the coming fall.

Of course, the possibilities for a loose tank-skinny pants-boots combo outfit are endless. Here's another very different example:

This outfit is more in the sleek/sophisticated vein than the tough starship-captain one, but it's sexy nonetheless.

Here is yet another example:

This is a much more relaxed look but also very cute and feminine. The tank top is so cute-I'll think I'll go buy it!

Anyway, happy Futurama watching! Hope tonight's episode is just as good as the last two!
