Ms. Granger's All Grown Up!

Merlin's Beard! Hermione's hair is GONE-and guess what? It looks FANTASTIC! I don't know about you guys, but I got a little verklemt when I saw this picture. Emma Watson just looks so grown up! Remember the first Harry Potter movie, when Hermione was just this sorta mousy yet very cute little thing with her curly hair? Now she looks so sleek and sophisticated!

Plus I was just a little older than Emma Watson herself when Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone came out, so now I feel old. I don't look as good as she does, but I'm growing up too, lol. Hermione's always had a special place in my heart for a lot of reasons, mostly because I was always that kid in school. You know, this one:

Now that I think about it, there have been a lot of sci-fi/fantasy heroines who've looked amazing with short hair. Like Trinity from The Matrix trilogy and Anna on V. It's enough to make any chic geek wonder if she would look good with short hair too.

So, to help answer this pressing question, I've scoured the Interwebs for some tips on how to tell if you'd look good with an Emma Watson-style pixie cut, and how to style it if you already have it. And here they are!:

Short Hair Shoulds and Shouldn'ts

1. Are you tall? Think twice about the pixie cut. If you're over, say, 5'7", having extemely short hair will throw your proportions off. Try a bob instead.

2. Have a round or oval face? Go short! Short hair is particularly flattering on these face shapes. Not sure what shape your face even is? Check out this site for a helpful tutorial.

3. Curly Hair? Careful with a short cut. Curly hair tends to get poofy when it's cut short, so avoid the crazy look by going with a longer cut.

4. Really thin hair? Cut it short! Making your hair shorter will give it more volume and bounce, so go for it!

5. Be sure you like your neck and shoulders before going for the pixie cut. Having very short hair will draw attention to these areas, so be sure you're comfortable with that before taking the short-hair plunge.

6. Want to avoid the helmet-head look? Add texture and color. If you decide to go with the pixie cut, make sure the stylist adds dimension to your look. Ask him or her to cut your hair with a razor to give it great texture. Adding highlights can also ensure that you won't look you've got a bowl on your head.

7. Don't wanna look like a dude? Accessorize! Short hair does have the potential to make you look more masculine, but you can tone it down with some delicate/girly accessories. Try a pair of chandelier earrings or a cute barrette. You could even wear a flower in your hair, plastic or real!

Well, there you have it! Short hair just seems like it's easy to take care of too. So go for it if you're lazy. Happy hair cutting!

Inception Fashion Review: A Whole Lotta WTF

First off, I would just like to say: Thank you, Inception! My brain hadn't been really, truly, and honestly confused since LOST ended back in May, and you definitely delivered. I though the movie was fantastic: exciting, trippy, unexpected, conducive to popcorn-eating, and all that you could ever want a summer movie, or pretty much any movie, to be. I don't think I understood it all, but I loved it!!

That being said, there was one thing that did kinda bother me about Inception. Just one teeny nitpicky little thing, namely: WHAT IN THE HELL WAS ELLEN PAGE WEARING?!!! Ok, I get that she's supposed to be student so she maybe wouldn't have the most expensive wardrobe in the world, but why would she have such a drab and frumpy one? I mean, there are plenty of stylish students out there. Just because a girl has a brain doesn't mean she has to dress like a sad sack.

Page's wardrobe is even more glaring when compared with what the other characters were wearing. It seemed like everybody looked good, like really good, except for Ellen Page! I mean, check it out if you don't believe me:

Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Leo Dicaprio looked like they just walked off a GQ photoshoot, for goodness sake! And Marion Cotillard looked like an old-school Hollywood bombshell in glamorous, sensual couture. (On a side note, did anybody else want to scream "No!!" when she dropped her fabulous shoes over the side of the building? No? Am I bad person for thinking that during that scene? Well, maybe...)

Anyway, I'm not saying that every female movie character has to be dressed to the nines like Mal in Inception or that all film women need to have an specific "look". I mean, Mal isn't real, even within the context of the movie; she's a projection of Cobb's memory and is no doubt idealized. No real women dress like that all of the time!

I actually like it when movies have female characters who look like real women. I wouldn't have wanted Ellen Page's character to look like a Bond girl or like some sort of sex kitten, or even like a fashionista. However, it seemed like she was purposely dressed to look jarringly bad! Everyone else looked like clothing models, while her pants didn't even fit! They were way too long and bunched up weirdly around her dirty-looking boots.

Also, take the shirt that she's wearing in the above photo. It's way too baggy and boxed-shaped to be even slightly flattering. She actually looks kinda like she's pregnant. The colors she wore throughout the movie were pretty dull as well. I actually thought her neckerchiefs were cute and quirky, but I think I counted 87 of them, which is overkill, needless to say. There are other accessories a girl can wear, you know. Like earrings. Or a necklace. Or a bracelet. Page wears not a single one of these in the movie, at least not that I could see.

So I'm left wondering: did they dress Ellen Page this way because Ariadne was a "geek"? Apparently just because she was an intelligent woman, she had to be dressed in the most unflattering, frumpy wardrobe of any character in the film. Leo DiCaprio's and Joseph Gordon-Levitt's characters are presumably extremely smart as well, yet these geek guys look great!

What's the deal with making geek women in movies look either extremely over-sexualized (like in librarian glasses and some sort of ridiculously tight lab coat) or really disheveled and unattractive? The stereotype of the homely, poorly dressed nerd girl is clearly still with us. Not all intelligent or "geeky" women dress like they just threw on the worst clothes in their closets and called it a day. Plenty of them are stylish! Even geek girls who aren't that into fashion probably have some clothes that at least fit. Or wear an accessory once in a while. Nobody likes stereotypes, and hopefully ones about geek girls are on their way out.

Robot Charm Necklace Totally Looks Like Bender from Futurama

What an adorably geeky accessory! Am I right in saying that it looks like Bender, or am I just crazy? You can buy these cute robot necklaces over at Plasticland. They come with nice long chains and would look great with a lot of casual outfits. Plus, you gotta admit that the robot is a unique charm. I've seen a lot of lovely long charm necklaces with charms like keys, flowers, and leaves, but a robot is totally unexpected and very geek chic!!

You also have the option between the traditional"foghat gray" Bender from Universe A that we all know and love and the golden Bender from Universe B necklace. Hmm, which one to choose? I'm more of a gold person, and I like Bender from Universe B, so I think I'll go with that one. Or maybe I'll buy both. Bite my shiny metal ass, credit card company to which I am in debt!!

These are the stickers you're looking for...

What could be better than adorable Hello Kitty stickers? Uh, Star Wars-themed Hello Kitty stickers, of course!! I found these over at Must Have Cute. Check 'em out! :

cute kawaii stuff - Hello Kitty Star Wars

You can buy these ones and more, including a super cute and yet somehow still kinda sexy Han Solo sticker, at Hello Wars. Apparently the company is going to be making necklaces too! Man do I want an R2D2 necklace (if I were playing the "If you were a Star Wars character, who would you be?" game, I'd def be R2D2 because I'm small and I like to make beepy noises sometimes)! Chewie with a bow is pretty cute too, though. So many choices!

"Can you believe she wore a tank top to my funeral?"

Ah Futurama, it's good to have you back. Please never leave us again! Hey, here's something I never knew about the show: according to IMDB, Leela's outfit is based on those worn by the ass-kicking, name-taking heroines of scifi classics such as Alien and Terminator 2: Judgement Day. Case in point: Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor

Man, she looks totally badass! Granted, part of it is the machine gun in her hand and the fact that's she jacked, but the skintight tank and pants do contribute to the overall effect of kickassery. Of course, pulling off a Leela or Sarah Connor outfit in the real world (without the guns in your hand, mind you) might be a little difficult. Unless you have a flawlessly sculpted physique (or are drawn by an animator for maximum curvaceousness), wearing both a skintight top and a skintight bottom might draw attention to some stuff you'd rather hide. Plus, it might look kind of skanky/trashy, especially if you're not wearing a bra like Ms. Connor up there.
Good News Everyone!

This doesn't mean you having to give up on having a sleek, slim, and flattering silhouette. You can certainly wear one very close-fitting garment at a time. In this case I'd go with a tighter pair of bottoms, like black, gray, or dark blue skinny jeans. Jeggings (jean leggings) are another comfy and popular trend. A dark solid color is slimming and can make your legs look longer than they really are. Contrary to popular belief, a chic geek of any size can wear skinny jeans, as long as she keeps her entire look in miThis is wear the tank top comes in. It is tank top season, after all, and there are a lot of varieties of these suckers! There's a tank to flatter every body type out there, from elongating V-necks for petites to babydolls for ladies with a tummy. Also, there are plenty of detailed and even dressy tanks with details that can enhance your look. Got Kate-on-Lost style buff shoulders and upper arms? Buy a tank with unique straps! Got great Lara Croft-like boobs? Draw attention to them with a ruffle! Don't like your arms at all? Tank tops make great layering pieces too. Wear them with a chic cardigan or tailored jacket!

Bender to Leela: "Honey, I wouldn't talk about taste if I was wearin' a lime-green tank top"

Wearing the right colors for your skin, hair, and eyes is a must if you want to be a chic geek. Interested in finding your best colors? Then check out thechicfashionista.com. This site gives great instructions for finding out which colors suit you best, as well as a ton of AWESOME advice on dressing to flatter your body type. Give it a read!

Leela Look-Alike for the Chic Geek

So, just for the hell of it, I put together my very own Leela outfit! It can even be worn out amongst the general public:

I added some accessories because, well, I like accessories!! I particularly like the black and turquoise cuff bracelet since I think it totally looks like the thing that Leela wears on her arm. Note the loose-fitting white racerback tank to go along with the tight jeggings. Also, I like the ankle boots with this outfit as opposed to calf-high boots, since a tank is a lighter, smaller garment and calf-high boots tend to weigh an outfit down a bit. Plus, ankle boots are perfect shoes for the coming fall.

Of course, the possibilities for a loose tank-skinny pants-boots combo outfit are endless. Here's another very different example:

This outfit is more in the sleek/sophisticated vein than the tough starship-captain one, but it's sexy nonetheless.

Here is yet another example:

This is a much more relaxed look but also very cute and feminine. The tank top is so cute-I'll think I'll go buy it!

Anyway, happy Futurama watching! Hope tonight's episode is just as good as the last two!

LOST's Best Dressed

With LOST ending on Sunday, I thought it might be fun to take a look back at some of my favorite castaways' best fashion moments. Granted, they've spent a lot of time beating dirty, beaten (Ben, I'm looking at you), and generally kinda disgusting during their time on the island. But thanks to the flashbacks, flashforwards, and flash-sideways, the Losties have shown that they can be pretty stylin'.

Plus, none of them ever really look bad on the island, seeing as their physical appearances are pretty much between "fairly good looking" and "Holy Shit" on the looks scale. So even when they look bad, they still look pretty good. Of course, some of them...

have managed to pull off the whole "Island Fabulous" look better than others.

Over the next few long, long days until what is sure to be the greatest series finale ever, I'll pick a few castaways each day and say what I think is their best fashion moment. Feel free to let me know what you think!

Let's start with one of my favs, Mr. Benjamin "I'm Probably Bleeding from my Face Right Now" Linus:

Character: Benjamin Linus
Best Fashion Moment: Season 4, Episode 9: The Shape of Things to Come

When I first saw this episode, I remember thinking, "Damn, Ben looks fly!" First off, the simple charcoal trench coat is a great statement, especially on a smaller guy like Ben. It fits him perfectly too. Trench coats are also practical outerwear for pretty much every occasion, not just threatening the life of your sworn enemy's daughter.

Gotta love Ben's well-tailored suit too. I particularly like the polka-dot patterned tie with the solid gray suit and solid eggplant shirt. It makes it more interesting that an ensemble of all solids.
It's usually a good idea to contrast patterns and solids when wearing a suit, and Ben's does it nicely.

Honorable Mention: Ben's HILARIOUS safari outfit from earlier in the episode. Makes me smile every time I look at it. Oh Ben, you're so silly! (and yet so evil...)

Character: Kate "I Still Suck after Six Seasons" Austen
Best Fashion Moment: Season 5, Episode 11: Whatever Happened, Happened

Normally I hate everything that Kate is and does. Except for this outfit, I guess. First of all, her pencil skirt is fantastic! Pencil skirts are something I think every woman should have, since they never go out of style. I like the choice of slate as a neutral for this outfit, rather than black, khaki, or brown. It goes very well with the flattering scoop-neck blue sweater.

I also like the fact that the pencil skirt is high-waisted and belted at just the right place for a flattering silhouette. This would be a great outfit for the office. Or, in Kate's case, for practicing some seriously bad parenting.

Character: Sayid "I'm an Unstoppable Killing Machine" Jarrah
Best Fashion Moment: Season 4, Episode 3: The Economist

I love Sayid's golf outfit simply because he makes golfing look so sexy! (at least until he starts killing people) The light stripes on the polo and the light khakis look great with his skin tone. Also, navy blue is a good color on pretty much everybody. The outfit is comfortable, sporty, and stylish, the perfect combo for golfing...or shooting somebody in cold blood.

This is a good episode for Sayid outfits, lol. I like the pinstriped gray suit and eggplant shirt combination here too. However, I am partial to Sayid's really curly hair, but that's just me.

Well, that's it for now. I'll be back with more of LOST's best fashion moments later on :)

First Post!!

Yay, my first-ever blog post! I've been interested in trying out blogging for awhile, and now seems as good as time as any. With LOST ending on Sunday (nooo!!!), I'm gonna need something to keep me off the streets. Plus I'm graduating from school next week. Funny how that comes second to the LOST finale...

Anyway, I'm K-10, a nerd and a fashion enthusiast. I believe all nerdy girls and guys are smart, funny, and generally awesome! Fashion has been something that helped me gain self-confidence in my life as a nerd, so I figured I could combine these two interests in writing this blog. I'll also try to include some fashion tips and advice just in case anybody feels like reading it, lol.

Hey, writing this has been fun! I hope to be back later!
